This television season we’ve gotten to know gay characters like Connor Walsh on ABC’s How To Get Away With Murder, Ronnie McCarthy on CBS’s The McCarthys and the Kevins on NBC’s Marry Me. And now that the new year has begun, let’s add Gregory Valentine to the list from Fox’s new series, Backstrom.

The series, adapted from the novels by Swedish novelist Leif G. W. Personn, follows cantankerous Detective Everett Backstrom (Rainn Wilson) as he uses unconventional methods to solve crimes.

One person who has forged a relationship of sorts with Backstrom is Valentine. As played by Thomas Dekker, the eccentric Valentine is gay, a decorator who has mysterious underground connections and just happens to be Backstrom’s roommate. The series also stars Dennis Haysbert, Genevieve Angelson, Page Kennedy and Kristoffer Polaha.

I sat down with Dekker recently to talk about the character, what connects Valentine to Backstrom and just how far the show will go to explore Valentine’s sex life.

The BackLot: Valentine is definitely an interesting creation. How did you connect with such a crazy character?

Thomas Dekker: And he gets crazier as the show progresses.

Blending In With The Cast Of ‘Squatters’

“We head to the beach where actors Gabriella Wilde, Thomas Dekker, and Luke Grimes are shooting their film ‘Squatters’, and we ask them whose house they would love to squat in in real life and what hobbies they partake in between scenes. Find out which one would love to prank the Obamas, who’s obsessed with Angry Birds, and how each of them would persuade co-star Richard Dreyfus to rock out! Hosted by Nikki Novak (@nikkinovak).”
